AFC
Jay Goldberg's 2007 Predictions
| NFC EAST |
PHI (11-5) -McNabb and Westbrook will stay healthy. Curtis will become a true #1 receiver. Considine, Cole and Gaither bring youth and speed to the defense. DAL (10-6) - Romo is for real, their defense is very good. However, without Parcells the 'Boys starting wide receivers situation could provide headaches. Glenn with injuries and Owens with behavior. NYG (7-9) - The Giants need to miss the playoffs if only to move on from Coughlin. Defense, not Manning will be their undoing. WAS (5-11) - No matter how many names they bring in they are still behind their NFC East brethren in terms of team management (from owner to front office, to yes, coaching staff). |
| NFC CENTRAL |
DET (9-7) - Maybe this is too much confidence in a Martz offense, but in a very weak division, I look for the Lions' to have an explosive offense and steal the division title. On defense, the Lions have some good young players who will come up with some big plays as well. CHI (9-7) - Bad management and personnel mistakes in the off season will result in a drop off from da Bears. From giving only half playoff shares to key front office personnel, to letting Thomas Jones walk and trusting in Benson to the Briggs mess, the Bears cohesive team will show some cracks this year. GB (6-10) - The Pack is improved, especially on defense, but have a tough schedule. This is the year that the reins are finally turned over to Rodgers. MIN (4-12) - This team is a mess on offense at
quarterback and receiver. Their defense is solid, but it won't be
enough. |
| NFC SOUTH |
TB (10-6) - Last to first is the norm in this division. The Bucs are a better team than most think. NO(10-6) - The Saints are a monster on offense, but I'm not convinced that their defense is Super Bowl worthy. CAR (9-7) - The Panthers are tough to read. They are like the woman in Seinfeld who looked pretty at times and ugly at times depending upon the light in which she is viewed. That is how I feel about Carolina. The only thing I'm sure of is that they are better off with Delhomme than with Carr. ATL(5-11) - It will be a tough year for the
Falcons. They won't be as bad as many think but they are in a tough
division. They will play close games and Harrington will have his
best year (I know that's not a difficult task). |
| NFC WEST |
SEA (11-5) - Most are predicting a tough road for the Seahawks this year. I am not one of them. Branch finally gets his 1,000 yard plus season and I love their new safety tandem. ARZ (9-7) - I don't know how this team continues to do as poorly as it has in the past. They have studs on offense and defense. The new coaching staff finally gets them over the hump. SF (7-9) - The 49ers are the darlings of many this year. Not me. Look for a slight bump in the road for Smith this year. Jackson, makes big plays but also drops key throws, is not a good match for a young quarterback. On defense they are changing to a 3-4 and their young players are very good, but will be inconsistent which will lead to giving up some big plays. They are a year away. STL (7-9) - The Rams are stuck in the middle. They
are a plus offense and a minus defense that will result in a record around
.500. |

| AFC EAST |
NE (12-4) - Brady to Stallworth
made me smile, Brady to Welker was a match made in heaven, Brady to Moss
will be the top QB/WR combo this year. On defense with Thomas (at
inside linebacker - I love it) added, Harrison back, and all key pieces
still in place (if Samuel continues to hold out, Gay is a fine
replacement) the Pats will remain hard to crack. BUF (10-6) - Smith, Rivers, Leinart, Cutler, are the names everyone is talking about in terms of a young QB moving to the head of the class. The guy I like to make a major move this year is Losman. By the time its all said and done Losman to Evans will be one of the best QB/WR combos ever. Think that's too much? Just watch over the next 10 years. NYJ (8-8) - The Jets will take a small step back this year, allowing them to transition to Clemens late in the year and be set up for a return to the playoffs next year. MIA (4-12) - Miami is a mess. Green is not a good fit for receivers with deep speed (Chambers, Ginn), Brown is good but is not the dominate back they hoped he would become, their offense line is still one of the worst in the league and their defense is a bit overrated. |
| AFC CENTRAL |
PIT (10-6) - BIg Ben is an underrated quarterback. Parker is an underrated running back. Holmes will take a major step forward and then be an underrated wide receiver. This team's offense will be explosive. And their defense is still pretty good. CIN (9-7) - The Bengals are a solid football team. But that's all they are. Everyone keeps waiting for them to be great, but I don't see that happening this year. BAL (8-8) - Everybody Loves "Ray"vens. Not me. McNair is now a game manager not a game changer, McGahee is an overrated back, he lacks the speed to break big plays, and their defense took a hit with the loss of Thomas. CLE (4-12) - A team is in trouble when the most
interesting things in camp are watching Quinn against third stringers and
watching the battle between Harrison and Barclay (both good players) for
the third string running back position. By the way look for Quinn to
get on the field later in the year and the winner of the Harrison/Barclay
battle to be the Browns most effective runner after Lewis disappoints. |
| AFC SOUTH |
IND (12-4) - With limited options after Addai at running back, look for Manning to have a monster year like he did a couple of years ago. However, to move on in the playoffs they need to find a defensive tackle that can stiff the run. TEN (8-8) - The Titans are moving on the right direction. Young is the real deal and maybe next year they will add some top notch wide receivers for him to throw to. JAC (8-8) - I get the felling that their window of opportunity with this group (including the coach) has passed them by. HOU (4-12) - I loved my quote from last year, "The Texans continue their futility, not
surprising from a team that didn't select Reggie Bush with their top
pick. However, I do like Lundy, a player for whom I had a third
round grade, and the rookie linebacker Ryans could lead the league in
tackles." At least I get a pat on the back for my
Ryans comment. That's more tham I can say for a team that gave up
too much to acquire Schaub, another QB who will get beaten down by the
lack of pass protection. |
| AFC WEST |
DEN (10-6) - This is despite my lack of faith in Cutler. I do like Ramsey, their new backup if he's forced to play. This team will need some tweaking on defense during the year (e.g. Williams moving back outside, Webster to the middle, Crowder eventually starting at defensive end, etc.) but should be hitting its stride heading into the playoffs. SD (10-6) - An entirely new coaching staff for a team that had a great record last year will cause problems the second something goes wrong, and something always goes wrong. The Chargers will take a step back this year. OAK (7-9) - The Raiders have an excellent defense and I think Culpepper will have a comeback year. KC (5-11) - Coach Edwards wants to get younger and
younger usually means a year or two of more losses than wins. I like
some of their young pieces on both offense (Croyle, Bowe) and defense
(Page, Pollard), but they are in a very tough division and will take a
step back before moving forward. |
