NFL DRAFT - ROUND 1 |
| Pick |
Team |
Projection |
Comment |
| 1 |
Detroit |
Stafford
QB
Georgia |
Sorry
Lion fans, I now have a bad feeling that Detroit will select
Stafford. And yes, the trade of Cutler to a team in their
Division could be the tipping point. After all, keeping up
with the Joneses is a popular theme in the NFL. Besides,
all reports indicated that Stafford had a very good private
workout with the Lions. Unfortunately, even with
the trade for Peterson, I believe the Lions should select Curry.
Why? When is the last time the Lions had a
team identity generated from a major team strength; from a unit
that could be classified as one of the best in the NFL?
Well, Peterson, Curry and Sims would give the team a tremendous
team strength and place them in the conversation for best
linebacking unit in the NFL.
Pick history:
02/12 = OLB Curry
02/28 = OLB Curry
03/10 = OLB Curry
03/22 = OLB Curry
04/04 = QB Stafford
04/18 = QB Stafford |
| 2 |
St.
Louis |
Sanchez
QB
USC |
Sorry
Washington, Jets, et all; even with Stafford now off the board I
believe the Rams will go quarterback. Especially with
Sanchez rising to the top spot for quarterbacks on some
draft analysts' boards (including mine). I know,
I know, everyone has the Rams selecting an offensive
tackle. However, based
on his performance last year, the Rams have to be at least a
little concerned that Bulgar's skills are in decline.
Sanchez can come in and sit for a year or so
behind Bulgar, or jump in if Bulgar continues to disappoint.
Pick
history:
02/12 = QB Stafford
02/28 = QB Stafford
03/10 = QB Stafford
03/22 = QB Stafford
04/04 = QB Sanchez
04/18 = QB Sanchez |
| 3 |
Kansas
City |
Orakpo
OLB/DE
Texas |
The
Chiefs' pick will be very interesting. However, the team
wants to play a 3-4 and Curry's spot in a 3-4 will, most likely,
be inside. Orakpo will play outside and will generate the
sacks and pressures needed for a 3-4 defense to be
successful. I do not believe Hali is fast enough or
athletic enough to play OLB in a 3-4 defense. So unless
the Chiefs feel confident that Curry can generate a consistent
pass rush from the OLB position, I now look for Kansas City to
draft Orakpo.
Pick
history:
02/12 = DT Raji
02/28 = DT Raji
03/10 = DT Raji
03/22 = DT Raji
04/04 = OLB Curry
04/18 = OLB Orakpo |
| 4 |
Seattle |
J Smith
OT
Baylor |
While Crabtree
is not out of the question even with the Housh signing (or Curry
of the draft falls like this), I'm sticking with Smith. Having Walter Jones all
these years has clearly showed the Seahawks how important a
dominate left tackle is. With Jones 35 and coming off a
knee injury, Seattle decides to grab their left tackle of the
future during a rare year where they have a top five pick.
Pick
history:
02/12 = WR Crabtree
02/28 = WR Crabtree
03/10 = OT J Smith
03/22 = OT J Smith
04/04 = OT J Smith
04/18 = OT J Smith |
| 5 |
Cleveland |
Raji
DT
Boston Col |
The
Browns were hoping for Orakpo, and will consider Curry, but will
ultimately come to the same conclusion as Kansas City, that my
#1 player in the draft, Curry, is a difference-maker for a 4-3
defense, and just a very, very good player for a 3-4
defense. The New England tree loves drafting athletic
defensive tackles. The Pats' ends, Seymour and Warren played
tackle in college. Raji fits the bill of a New England
type lineman and the Browns scoop him up.
Pick
history:
02/12 = OLB E Brown
02/28 = OLB Orakpo
03/10 = OLB Orakpo
03/22 = OLB Orakpo
04/04 = OLB Orakpo
04/18 = DT Raji |
| 6 |
Cincinnati |
Curry
OLB
Wake Forest |
Orakpo
is the player the Bengals need, but he is moving up my mock
draft, not down to the Bengals. The choice here will be
Monroe or Curry. If this scenario plays out, I look for
the Bengals to do the right thing and grab Curry. He will
replace Jeanty in their starting lineup from day one, pairing
with Rivers to give Cincinnati an impressive pair of bookend
outside linebackers.
Pick
history
02/12 = DE Orakpo
02/28 = OT J Smith
03/10 = OT Monroe
03/22 = OT Monroe
04/04 = OT Monroe
04/18 = OLB Curry |
| 7 |
Oakland |
Monroe
OT
Virginia |
Al,
draft a receiver. I said Al, draft a receiver. Well,
when have you ever known Al Davis to listen to the masses.
However, with Monroe available, I wouldn't blame him a bit for
moving off wide receiver and drafting the talented tackle.
Pick
history
02/12 = OT Monroe
02/28 = WR Macklin
03/10 = WR Macklin
03/22 = WR Macklin
04/04 = WR Macklin
04/18 = OT Monroe |
| 8 |
Jacksonville |
Crabtree
WR
Texas Tech |
I was
going back and forth between offensive tackle A Smith and
Crabtree and then Matt Jones did what he does best and made my
projection easy. Initially, I thought Jacksonville would
go for a speed receiver later in the draft to pair with Jones,
but now I believe they will go with the best receiver they can
get. Since my initial selection of Crabtree, the Jags have
released Jones, so I am even more secure in my Crabtree
projection.
Pick
history
02/12 = OT J Smith
02/28 = OT Monroe
03/10 = WR Crabtree
03/22 = WR Crabtree
04/04 = WR Crabtree
04/18 = WR Crabtree |
| 9 |
Green
Bay |
Jackson
DE
LSU |
Well,
it was fun (however briefly) while it lasted. However,
Raji is now gone. Given that scenario, logic would dictate
that I go back to a pass rushing OLB. But, hmmm, I now
think not. There is very, very good depth at that spot in
the draft so Green Bay can look for a pass-rushing OLB in round
two. However, it is rare that a stud, big defensive end
who can be a force in the 3-4 playing the run, and get
penetration against the pass and has first round talent comes
around. Jackson, however, is such a player.
Pick
history
02/12 = OT A Smith
02/28 = OT A Smith
03/10 = OT A Smith
03/22 = OLB Maybin
04/04 = DT Raji
04/18 = DE Jackson |
| 10 |
San
Francisco |
Maybin
OLB
Penn State |
With
Maybin available again I look for the 49ers to grab him,
especially after his impressive Pro Day. Offensive tackle A Smith is still
a possibility at this spot. A few years ago, I thought the
49ers grabbed a dominate OLB pass rusher in Lawson but he hasn't
been healthy, and was not a pass rushing force when healthy.
Pick
history
02/12 = CB Jenkins
02/28 = OLB Maybin
03/10 = OLB Maybin
03/22 = OT A Smith
04/04 = OLB Maybin
04/18 = OLB Maybin |
| 11 |
Buffalo |
Ayers
DE
Tennessee |
The
trade of Peters will give the Bills pause at this spot for A
Smith or Oher, but I believe they will stick to drafting a defensive
end at this spot. While drafting Ayers is
a bit of a risk here because his value has skyrocketed
during the post-season, the Bills are a team that takes risks in
the draft (and now outside of the draft). Ayers is a
better fit at end as a three down player than Brown and he has
moved ahead of Brown on my draft board.
Pick
history
02/12 = WR Macklin
02/28 = DE Brown
03/10 = DE Brown
03/22 = DE Brown
04/04 = DE Ayers
04/18 = DE Ayers |
| 12 |
Denver |
Maualuga
ILB
USC |
Maualuga
may be moving down some draft boards, but he's not moving down
mine. Denver finally gets a dominate defensive player who will give
the Bronco defense an identity. Maualuga will be a force
in the middle of the Broncos' defense for years to come.
Pick
history
02/12 = ILB Maualuga
02/28 = ILB Maualuga
03/10 = ILB Maualuga
03/22 = ILB Maualuga
04/04 = ILB Maualuga
04/18 = ILB Maualuga |
| 13 |
Washington |
A Smith
OT
Alabama
|
The
Redskins would like a pass rushing defensive
end, and Everette Brown is now a possibility. However,
with Smith now available, and that is the direction I believe the
Redskins will go.
Pick
history
02/12 = OT Oher
02/28 = OT Oher
03/10 = OT Oher
03/22 = OT Oher
04/04 = OT A Smith
04/18 = OT A Smith |
| 14 |
New
Orleans |
Cushing
OLB
USC |
The
Saints outside linebackers are steady, but they are
replaceable. Cushing will come in and start from day one.
The steroid rumors surrounding Cushing have been shot down so
there is nothing stopping the Saints from taking him here.
Pick
history
02/12 = OLB Cushing
02/28 = OLB Cushing
03/10 = OLB Cushing
03/22 = OLB Cushing
04/04 = OLB Cushing
04/18 = OLB Cushing |
| 15 |
Houston |
Butler
CB
Connecticut |
Butler
is moving up draft boards very quickly. He ended my
prospect analysis process as the top cornerback on my board. I now look for the Texans to grab him at this
spot. Especially since Jenkins has speed concerns, and
Davis has consistency corners.
02/12 = CB Davis
02/28 = CB Davis
03/10 = CB Davis
03/22 = CB Davis
04/04 = CB Davis
04/18 = CB Butler |
| 16 |
San
Diego |
Oher
OT
Mississippi |
Sproles
is back, LT is back, but San Diego still needs a runner.
It just won't be in round one. I now have the Chargers
going with Oher, a player they are thrilled is still available, to help their offensive line.
Pick
history
02/12 = RB Wells
02/28 = RB Moreno
03/10 = RB Moreno
03/22 = OT Britton
04/04 = OT Oher
04/18 = OT Oher |
| 17 |
New
York Jets |
Macklin
WR
Missouri |
Wow,
are the Jets thrilled or what! There is always a top
player that falls because a team expected to draft at his
position (in this case the Raiders) goes in another direction and
his position doesn't match-up well with the teams that come up
next. In this mock draft the Jets are wax ecstatic as
Macklin falls to them at #17 in round one.
Pick
history
02/12 = CB Smith
02/28 = WR Heyward-Bey
03/10 = WR Heyward-Bey
03/22 = WR Heyward-Bey
04/04 = WR Heyward-Bey
04/18 = WR Macklin |
| 18 |
Denver |
Brown
DE/OLB
Florida State |
Some
will project Jerry here, but he is a better fit inside in a 4-3
front. So I have the Broncos going with Brown to play OLB in their new 3-4 defense. That is currently a very
weak position for the Broncos.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Maualuga
ILB
Pick
history
04/04 = DE Jackson
04/18 = OLB E Brown |
| 19 |
Tampa
Bay |
Jerry
DT
Mississippi |
This is
a tough spot to predict because the Bucs could go in a few different
directions. They could go QB with Freeman depending on how
they like him and their thoughts on Jackson (I player I like a
lot), or they could go LB with Matthews. However, with the loss of
Haye the Bucs badly need a penetrating defensive tackle and that
is precisely what Jerry is, so he is now my projection for the
Bucs.
Pick
history
02/12 = DT Jerry
02/28 = OLB Matthews
03/10 = QB Sanchez
03/22 = QB Sanchez
04/04 = DT Jerry
04/18 = DT Jerry |
| 20 |
Detroit |
Beatty
OT
Connecticut |
Following Atlanta's
lead of last year, the Lions now grab a left tackle. Their
selection will come down to Britton or Beatty. I have
Beatty rated more highly, hopefully the Lions do as well.
Beatty has tremendous upside.
PRIOR SELECTIONS: Stafford QB

| 21 |
Philadelphia |
Wells
RB
Ohio State |
The
buzz around Philly is that they like Moreno. However, Wells is a big back
with speed who will be a nice compliment to, and eventual
replacement for Westbrook. If the Eagles go Moreno over
Wells it will be a mistake.
02/12 = OT Beatty
02/28 = OT Beatty
03/10 = OT Britton

With
Britton now available, the Vikings grab him to challenge and
hopefully start at right tackle. Harvin may have
"smoked" his way out of this spot.

02/28 = OT Britton
03/10 = WR Harvin
03/22 = WR Harvin

| 23 |
New
England |
Barwin
OLB/DE/TE
Missouri |
I'm
sure some heads shook back on 2/28 when I first had Barwin being
drafted in round one by the Pats. However, his value keeps
going up. The
Pats draft the next Mike Vrabel. Barwin blew up the
Combine and got better on his Pro Day. He is a great athlete and can replace Vrabel both
on defense and offense.
Pick
history
02/12 = OLB Maybin
02/28 = OLB+ Barwin
03/10 = OLB+ Barwin
03/22 = OLB+ Barwin
04/04 = OLB+ Barwin
04/18 = OLB+ Barwin |

Matthews
OLB

While
Pettigrew still makes sense, Matthews is too good to pass up and
completes a rebuilt linebacking corps with Matthews at SAM,
Peterson at WILL and Lofton returning to MIKE.

Wake Forest |
Nicks will be tempting, but cornerback is a major area of

With a

With
Harvin still available, I can't see the Colts passing on giving

New

Robiskie
WR
Ohio State |
While
Nicks is still available, I just get the feeling that Robiskie
is their guy. The Giants need at
receiver is immediate and Robiskie is one of the most NFL-ready
receivers in the draft. He is also taller than
Nicks. So the Giants opt for a sure thing
with a lower ceiling over the potential of Nicks.

the Titans' need an end to replace Kearse sooner rather than

replacement at free safety.
