QB Rankings - 01/28
| 1 |
Young |
Texas |
Is much more than just a running quarterback.
Young can throw from the pocket and on the move, is a leader,
has a big-time arm, and is smart. If I was a GM, I would
make Young the top pick in the draft. |
| 2 |
Leinart |
USC |
From an ability standpoint, Leinart is more
like Eli Manning than fellow USC alum Carson Palmer.
Leinart is a heady quarterback who wins. Forget about the
arm strength questions, he'll be able to make all the throws in
the NFL. However, just like in the Roethlisberger-Manning
draft, where I had Big Ben rated hire than Eli, I prefer Young
over Leinart. |
| 3 |
Cutler |
Vanderbilt |
An interesting prospect, Cutler put up some big
numbers down the stretch against some pretty good competition
with little help around him. With good workouts, the
big-two could become the big-three. |
| 4 |
Croyle |
Alabama |
No quarterback helped himself more during
Senior Bowl week than Croyle. He showed a live arm, the
ability to move around in the pocket, and made some excellent
throws. |
| 5 |
Jacobs |
Bowling Green |
A player flying under the radar because he was
better in his sophomore year than he was last year (as a
junior). In his sophomore year, he threw for 40 TDs and
had only 4 ints. Jacobs is a very good athlete as well as
a very good quarterback. |
| 6 |
Whitehurst |
Clemson |
Was considered a top prospect earlier in his
career, injuries set him back, but he had a good Senior Bowl
week and could move up the draft board. |
| 7 |
Gradkowski |
Toledo |
A quarterback with good pocket poise and
awareness, as well as a good arm. Gradkowski is another
accurate quarterback with running ability. |

RB Rankings - 01/28
| 1 |
Bush |
USC |
Can do it all. Appears to be a bigger,
faster Brain Westbrook. Bush has a real chance to be the
first player picked in the draft. |
| 2 |
Williams |
Memphis |
Only question is his ability to block in pass
protection, but he is a tough kid, so that will come.
Williams is a lightning quick back, who can catch the ball out
of the backfield. Of the three second tier backs
(Williams, Maroney, White), Williams workout numbers will mean
the least. He is more quick than fast and it shows on the
football field regardless of how he times. |
| 3 |
Maroney |
Minnesota |
Williams, Maroney, and White rankings will be
fluid throughout the process as more information (primarily
workout numbers) is obtained. Maroney needs good forty and
short shuttle times to keep up with, and possibly pass Williams. |
| 4 |
White |
USC |
If White puts up Jamal Lewis forty times (4.33)
he could move into the top five of the draft. He he runs
4.5 or so, he'll stay in the pack with Williams and Maroney, and
where they are drafted will depend upon a team's system and
needs. White is the best power back of the three
(Williams, Maroney, White). |
| 5 |
Henderson |
Texas Tech |
I absolutely love this kid. Last year, I
had Barber as the best back outside of the top three. This
year I have Henderson after Bush and the second group of three.
He played in a spread offense in college and showed quickness,
cutting ability, and the ability to catch. At the East
West Shrine game he lined up in pro sets and ran tough between
the tackles. Henderson will be a steal for some team. |
| 6 |
Bell |
Arizona |
Not asked to do it all at Arizona, Bell showed
he could catch at Senior Bowl week. Bell has speed and
toughness, and good cutting ability. |
| 7 |
Calhoun |
Wisconsin |
Calhoun is an all-purpose-type back who may be
a little too small for a big-time NFL workload. However,
he is an exciting player with home-run potential. |

WR Rankings - 01/28
| 1 |
Holmes |
Ohio State |
Is NFL-ready. Holmes has speed, is a
polished route-runner, and can make the tough catch. |
| 2 |
Moss |
Miami |
Lightning quick, with amazing acceleration.
A little short, but could be a game-breaker in the NFL. |
| 3 |
Williams |
Oregon |
May become the most reliable receiver from this
class. Williams has better-than-you-think speed, excellent
hands, and toughness. |
| 4 |
Jackson |
Florida |
May be a couple of years away from producing
big numbers, but Jackson has the tools with which to develop
into a top number two receiver in the NFL. |
| 5 |
Hagan |
Arizona State |
Hagan's value seems to be dropping some heading
into the combine. He is a nice receiver, but that may not
be enough to hear his name called in the first two rounds. He
lost ground at the Senior Bowl and could drop significantly by
draft day if he doesn't have a good combine. |
| 6 |
Jennings |
Western Michigan |
An interesting prospect as a reliable, move the
chains receiver. Jennings can get open and catch the ball.
His workout will go a long way towards solidifying his high
ranking by me, or seeing him drop below some of the big
receivers that just missed my top six (for now). I expect
Jennings to put up better-than-expected speed and quickness
numbers. |

TE Rankings - 01/28
| 1 |
Davis |
Maryland |
The next in the line of big-play tight ends who
can stretch the field. Davis has wide receiver speed. |
| 2 |
Pope |
Georgia |
Even taller than Lewis, Pope is another
excellent receiving tight end with good speed for his size. |
| 3 |
Bryd |
USC |
Bryd could be a tight end or a h-back.
Bryd is a little shorter than the other tight ends, but still
has good size, hands, and speed. |
| 4 |
Lewis |
UCLA |
A tall tight end with good hands who can catch
the deep seam route. |
| 5 |
Day |
Oregon |
In a very deep draft for tight ends, Day has
excellent hands, good concentration, and can even block. |
| 6 |
Fasano |
Notre Dame |
A more traditional, very reliable,
move-the-chains, good blocking tight end. Does not have
the speed of the other tight ends, but could be the best bet for
a team that wants a tight end to block in the running game as
well as being a pass-catching threat. |

OL Rankings - 01/28
| 1 |
Ferguson OT |
Virginia |
A blue chip prospect, will be a dominating
player in the NFL. |
| 2 |
Jean-Gilles OG |
Georgia |
The best guard in the draft, Jean-Gilles is
tough and talented. |
| 3 |
McNeal OT |
Auburn |
Big and strong, McNeal will need to show good
footwork in workouts to keep this spot. |
| 4 |
Scott OT |
Texas |
A safer bet than some other tackles in the
draft, but not as much upside. Will be a good NFL player
for a long time. |
| 5 |
Justice OT |
USC |
May not be ready right away, but has tremendous
potential. |
| 6 |
Winston OT |
Miami |
Coming off injury he may not be able to strut
his stiff as much as others so he may drop some, not because of
his lack of ability, but because others may wow some scouts. |
| 7 |
Spencer OG |
Pittsburgh |
Played out of position at tackle his senior
year, but will be a domiante guard in the NFL. |
| 8 |
Mangold C |
Ohio State |
A man anyone would be proud to go to war with,
Mangold is a fierce competitor with excellent skills. |
| 9 |
Joseph OG |
Oklahoma |
Has the tools and athletic ability, but will
need to bulk up. |

DL Rankings - 01/28
| 1 |
Williams DE |
North Carolina |
A speed rusher with excellent size, and can
even get bigger. |
| 2 |
Ngata DT |
Oregon |
A big run-stuffing defensive tackle who is an
excellent athlete. A rare combination, could be very
special. |
| 3 |
Hali DE |
Penn State |
Has an excellent motor, is an excellent speed
rush and has enough size to play the run as well. |
| 4 |
Watson DT |
Michigan |
Best nose tackle prospect in the draft.
Massive and skilled. |
| 5 |
Tapp DE |
Virginia Tech |
Terrific pass rusher, very strong, very fast.
Could be a steal. |
| 6 |
Kiwanuka DE |
Boston College |
Tall, rangy defensive end with good speed. |
| 7 |
Bunkley DT |
Florida State |
Good inside pass rusher, good explosion off the
line, may need to bulk up depending upon team and role (could be
an excellent 3-4 end). |
| 8 |
Mahelona DT |
Tennessee |
Quick, agile defensive tackle that can rush the
passer. |
| 9 |
Gocong DE |
Cal Poly |
Obviously, he's not rated this high, but my
first heads up for a player who can rush the passer and play the
run. A sleeper. |

LB Rankings - 01/28
| 1 |
Hawk OLB |
Ohio State |
Toughness, strength, speed, and smarts.
Hawk will be an NFL star. |
| 2 |
Greenway OLB |
Iowa |
Plays the run and the pass well.
Greenway will be a sideline-to-sideline tackling machine. |
| 3 |
Ryans OLB |
Alabama |
A better football player than athlete, Ryans is
a consistent linebacker that makes all the plays. |
| 4 |
Jackson ILB |
Maryland |
The best inside linebacker in the draft,
Jackson is a physical presence in the middle with excellent
instincts and tackling skills. |
| 5 |
Sims OLB |
Florida State |
A bit undersized, Sims workout numbers will go
a long way towards deciding where he is drafted. If he
tests as the excellent athlete he appears to be he will go high
in the draft. If not, he lacks the physical size to be a
high pick. |
| 6 |
Howard OLB |
UTEP |
Talking about athletes ...... Howard is one of
the best in the draft. Is one of the best linebackers in
the draft as far as pass coverage is concerned, he has the
strength and speed to be effective against the run. Howard
may have the ability to be a dominating strong safety as well. |
| 7 |
Hodge ILB |
Iowa |
Excellent against the run, Hodge will need to
work on his pass defense to stay on the field in passing
situations. Still a dominate two-down middle linebacker
now, and the attitude and desire to be a three-down linebhacker
in the future. |
| 8 |
Carpenter OLB |
Ohio State |
A steady player always in the right position to
make plays. Gets sacks without big-time speed, and plays
the run well. |

DB Rankings - 01/22
| 1 |
Huff SS/CB |
Texas |
Will be a big hitting in the box strong safety
who has good cover skills, a rarity for big-hitting strong
safeties. |
| 2 |
Williams CB |
Virginian Tech |
A potential 6'2"shut down corner. If
he does in fact, "measure up", a tall shut down cover
corner is a highly-valued commodity. |
| 3 |
Hill CB |
Clemson |
Hill is a shorter, quicker cover corner with
excellent speed and terrific ball skills. He catches like
a wide receiver. I will be interested in seeing his
vertical leap. He can cover anyone, but can he go up and
challenge a high throw? |
| 4 |
Simpson FS |
South Carolina |
Has a nose for the ball, plays physically
against the run, and can step out and hold his own in pass
coverage. |
| 5 |
Marshall CB |
Fresno State |
Nice athlete with good cover skills, Marshall
is a quick corner who can play outside or match-up with slot
receivers. |
| 6 |
Youboty CB |
Ohio State |
Good speed and height, Youboty needs some
seasoning before he can contribute as a starter. |
| 7 |
Watkins FS |
Florida State |
An underrated prospect, Watkins is a playmaking
safety with good cover skills. |
| 8 |
Griffin CB |
Texas |
A corner who not only can cover but is a big
hitter who can step up and make a play in the running game. |
| 9 |
Allen FS/CB |
Tennessee |
A versatile athlete who can cover and has a
nose for the ball. |
| 10 |
Slay SS |
Texas Tech |
Yes, this is a little high for Slay, but this
guy may be the biggest hitter in the draft. He has
excellent tackling ability, and may be the best in-the-box
safety in the draft. He needs improvement in pass defense,
but in the right system he could be a monster. |
